English Language Support and Skills

As an English medium international school, students require a certain level of English proficiency in order to access learning at VIS.

Grades 9 & 10

Students are tested for, and are expected to have, an intermediate level of written and spoken English. They are assessed using the WIDA system and may be required to receive additional English Language Support. Students in this programme will work towards achieving the most challenging IGCSE English option available to them which may or may not include a Literature option, dependent upon the student’s ability level. If after being admitted it is determined that a student needs support beyond what is offered by the school, parents will be expected to secure private tutoring at their own expense.

Grades 11 & 12

Due to the highly rigorous nature of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, students are expected to have an advanced level of English proficiency at the time of admission. English proficiency levels will play a role in determining a student’s Language choices.  If it is later determined that a student needs support to be successful in the IB DP, parents will be expected to secure private tutoring at their own expense.
